Is It Difficult to Build Customer Relationships?

Ron Shevlin posted this article and got my attention. The Harvard Business Review recently interviewed a psychologist and discussed interpersonal relationship, which Ron blogged about from a marketing perspective. Ron states that marketers often fail at developing real relationships with customers.
We can often miss those “intimate moments of attachment” Ron speaks of. So after reading this article, I’d like to ask the Banktastic community if you feel that in your experiences in the industry, is customer relationship building really that difficult? It’s obviously dependent upon one’s ability to be real and sociable with customers, but do you feel that there are other barriers?
