I could see some interesting possibilities inside an FI. For example, a mashup of Twitter, IM, & location based services could be a killer internal app IMHO.
But FIs today just turn all those services off and don’t realize the potential!
I think identi.ca could be a great tool for FIs to use internally. It’s an open source platform styled after Twitter that can be installed behind a firewall.
IMO, we’ve only seen the beginning of microblogging. I almost like it better than instant messaging because it gives you the option of sending public OR private messages. If it’s something that everyone should know about, post it to the public and let them learn from what you’ve shared.
We’re looking to implement IM here in our company, but I’m almost thinking that a private microblogging setup might be better.
At TechCrunch50 yesterday, Yammer ( https://www.yammer.com/home ) launched and is exactly what you’re talking about.
The process is simple, create an account with your @example.com address and anyone else that has an @example.com address can join your companies private site. The have administration features which cost $1 per user per month.
Otto is paying attention. I have a yammer account it is just like Twitter but has a little more to it to make it user friendly in the corporate market. They also have an option to thread conversations and that is a big improvement over Twitter.
I don't know. I plan on blogging about this further but I think Twitter would be smart to acquire Yammer. So they could have a 'business model' on the enterprise side and continue what they are doing on the consumer side and in the event they wanted to do advertising too, they could have another revenue opportunity.
Course, Twitter could convert to business pretty quickly I would think thought acquisition.
First it was consumer-level microblogging platforms emerging every day and now it seems to be hitting the enterprise. A good project-tracking tool I found is called ididwork, which let’s you log tasks and get feedback through microblogging.

This is their press release.
Oh, not only did they present and debut at TechCrunch50, they won.
