Giveaways—- I love giveaways! Back in the day (20+ years ago) the Dallas Teacher’s Credit Union gave away TOASTERS for new accts! Lots of teachers needed toasters, I guess, cause it was the talk of the teacher’s lounge, I remember!
A couple of thoughts came to me based on your comments.
1) It’s interesting that you remember such a promotion, it obviously made the impact they were hoping for.
2) CUs talk always striving to know their members and maybe toasters were the latest/greatest in gadgetry back then but shouldn’t something more ‘teacher-specific’ been given?
The only time a giveaway would be a bad idea is if it costs more to give whatever it is away than you’re making in new accounts or deposits. Of course, you’d need a crystal ball to see exactly what the outcome of the giveaway will be.
Even something as simple as a key chain can be a good give away. You’d be surprised how many Maine State CU flashlight key chains I see floating around the Augusta area a year after we gave them away.

3) Are giveaways ever a bad move?
